Sometimes we have
distressing times in our lives, or feelings that seem to have no
end. We might feel very alone and not know how to deal with
these situations,
change
them or make them go away. I think of counselling as an
opportunity for you
to look at
difficult times in your life in a way that is not usually
possible. The relationship
between client
and counsellor is unique; it is created specifically to look at
your troubles and
support you through those difficult times and
it is ended when you decide that you have done enough.
My work
as your counsellor is to accompany you as you look at your life.
It is also to facilitate your discoveries as your self-knowledge
deepens or as you try to find ways to make changes that will
make your life better. You may not know what is wrong it’s just
that something is not right, we can look at where these feelings
come from and try to find ways to make things better. We can
also look at any difficult or painful feelings or situations you
may have, discuss them openly and, together, find ways for you
to cope with them. As your counsellor I will not give you advice
or tell you how to resolve a problem; I will support you as you
find your own answers.
The person-centred approach to counselling is based on the
belief that each of us tries to live our lives to the best of
our ability but sometimes we are unable to do that, perhaps the
inner voices we hear are telling us we are not capable enough,
perhaps the circumstances of our life are not as we would like
them. Counselling can help you to find the way to silence those
voices and make things right for yourself. For more about the
person-centred approach please go to my page ‘My Philosophy’.
Sometimes I am asked if a problem is too insignificant to talk
about in counselling or is a waste of time. I believe that any
issue, if it bothers you, is important and am willing to spend
time discussing it with you.
